A dental implant is a titanium screw placed in the jaw bone in place of a lost tooth, with a crown fitted on top. The screw takes over the job of the natural tooth root, and the crown forms the visible part of the tooth.
It is one of the most lasting ways to replace a missing tooth. Because it puts no pressure on the neighboring teeth, it does not call for filing down healthy teeth, and that is its key difference from a bridge.
An implant is placed when a single tooth is lost, when several teeth are missing in one area, in full tooth loss as support for fixed or removable dentures, and when existing dentures do not fit the mouth properly.
For the treatment to work, the jaw bone has to have enough density and volume. If the bone falls short, procedures to strengthen it can be planned beforehand.
The treatment is assessed at the first examination. The dentist studies the jaw bone with tomography and decides where the implant will sit.
Under local anesthesia the implant is placed in the jaw bone; you feel no pain during the procedure. A healing period of two to four months follows so the implant fuses with the bone.
Once the fusion is complete, a support piece and the crown are fixed onto the implant. At this stage the color, shape and size of the tooth are planned to match your other teeth.

With good care it can be used for many years. Its lifespan comes down to oral hygiene, regular check-ups and your general health. With the right care an implant serves trouble-free for a long time.
An implant is put off in young patients whose jaw bone is still developing, in diabetics with poor blood sugar control, in untreated gum disease, and in heavy smokers. Most of these can be made suitable for an implant with the necessary preparation or treatment.
