A subepithelial connective tissue graft is a widely used and refined form of connective tissue graft, used to treat gum recession by covering an exposed root and adding thickness to thin gum. The word subepithelial describes where the tissue comes from: it is taken from beneath the surface (epithelial) layer of the palate, so that only the underlying connective tissue is moved to the area being treated, and the surface of the palate can often be closed over the donor site. At the recession site, the graft is placed into a small pocket or envelope created under the existing gum, which is then laid back over it. Because the graft is largely covered by the patient's own gum, it tends to have a good blood supply for healing and to blend in with a natural colour, which is why this technique is often preferred in visible, aesthetic areas.
