Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that uses a chemical process to lift the staining that builds up on teeth over time. Teeth whitening uses a chemical process to break down the color molecules that build up on the enamel and in the tissue underneath it. The gel is based on either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. It soaks into the enamel, breaks apart the molecules that darken the tooth, and the tooth ends up a few shades lighter.
One thing worth clearing up: nothing is stripped from the enamel. The structure of the tooth stays the same, and only the pigments dissolve. Done under a dentist's supervision, whitening does not harm the teeth.
There are two kinds of staining. Surface stains sit on the outside of the tooth and usually come from what you eat and drink. The deeper kind forms inside the tooth, and no amount of brushing will shift it.
Behind most surface stains you will find dark drinks like coffee, tea and red wine, along with smoking and a brushing routine that has slipped. The deeper discoloration has different causes: enamel that thins with age and lets the dentin show through, certain antibiotics taken in childhood, nerve tissue that died after an injury, or too much fluoride.
It starts with an examination. The dentist checks the teeth and gums first and treats any decay, leaking filling edges or gum inflammation before anything else. Whitening an unhealthy mouth only raises sensitivity and spoils the result.
Next comes a scaling, because the layer of tartar on the surface keeps the gel from touching the enamel evenly. The gums are covered with a protective barrier and the gel goes onto the teeth. In the clinic, activating the gel with LED or laser light makes it work harder.
This is done in one sitting and takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes. The gel is concentrated, so you see the result the same day. Because a dentist runs the session, the risk of gum burns or heavy sensitivity stays low.
Here the dentist makes a tray molded to your own teeth. You load it with a milder gel and wear it yourself for set periods. The result shows over a few weeks, and it can be combined with the in-office method if you want.
The first 48 hours matter most. The enamel stains more easily during this window, so a little care over the next few days makes the result last.
Some sensitivity is normal and usually fades on its own within a few days. If it lingers, your dentist can suggest a peroxide-free gel or a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth.
No, it is not permanent. But it holds up for a long time. How long depends mostly on you: your diet and how you look after your teeth. For someone who does not smoke and keeps colored drinks in check, the result can last years. With a regular coffee-and-cigarette routine, the color comes back sooner.
